ARAW NG MGA MANGGAGAWA

Happy Labor Day!
A day to celebrate and commemorate the value and purpose of Labor Day
History of Labor Day
Labor Day was first celebrated on May 1, 1903. The Union Obrera Democratica de Filipina (U.O.D.F.), formed in February 1902 by Isabelo Delos Reyes, was the first-ever labor organization consisting of more than 100,000 employees. They marched from Tondo’s Plaza Moriones to Malacanang, protesting and demanding fair wages and better working conditions from the American-led government at the time.
Celebrations and Activities
Thousands of trade unions in the Philippines use Labor Day to plan celebrations and bring up significant issues about improving labor relations. Events include rallies and marches to protest unfair labor practices, as well as recognition of workers’ contributions through bonuses and incentives by employers.
One of the most significant events is the annual Labor Day Job and Livelihood Fair, organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). It provides job opportunities, livelihood programs, skills training, business seminars, and product exhibits to promote entrepreneurship among Filipinos, especially the youth.
Recognition of Workers
Labor Day also highlights outstanding workers and organizations through awards and ceremonies. DOLE presents the Mabini Awards to honor Filipino workers who have made significant contributions in their respective fields, named after revolutionary leader Apolinario Mabini, an advocate of workers’ rights.
Challenges for Workers
Despite achievements, challenges like contractualization, low wages, unsafe working conditions, and lack of benefits persist. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened these issues, with many Filipinos losing jobs and struggling to make ends meet.
HAPPY LABOR’S DAY EVERYONE, CONTINUE BEING AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS!
